Course Objectives

This course covers the application of rhetorical theory and criticism to one or more case studies. The exact nature of the course focus is dependent on the instructor of record. The readings for this course vary in length, difficulty, and origination. Typically, readings are a mix of scholarly material from the field of rhetoric and material from popular press. As part of lecture and discussion, students will be required to analyze and discuss opposing points of view on topics relevant to the course. In addition, all written assignments require students to critically analyze opposing points of view on a given topic relevant to the course. Students will also be required to apply prior research to advance reasoned and unique theses on topics relevant to the case study or studies under consideration.


Topical Outline

The exact nature of the topics covered are dependent on the focus of this special topics course. As part of lecture and discussion, students will be required to analyze and discuss opposing points of view on topics relevant to the course. In addition, all written assignments require students to critically analyze opposing points of view on a given topic relevant to the course. Students write at a minimum equivalent of three 10-15 page papers requiring a synthesis of prior theoretical and academic research, and an application of prior research to advance reasoned and unique theses on topics relevant to the course (topics will vary by semester).
