Course Description
Introduces students to computer-aided 2D and 3D design, modeling, and manufacturing concepts. By the end, students will have a solid foundation to pursue goals in production, prototyping, and modeling. Students will explore various software interfaces and digital tools to create 2D and 3D projects.

Non-Traditional Format
Fabrication of CAD projects will be done by students in the metalsmithing and jewelry studios of the School of Art, as well as other digital fabrication and maker spaces on the UGA campus.

Students will develop skills in a variety of 2D and 3D CAD/CAM software and acquire a broad understanding of various design and production sources and methods.
Students will understand 2D and 3D computer-aided design and modeling software.
Students will be able to Identify multiple file types and how to work between them.
Students will be able to prepare files for different 2D and 3D applications.
Students will gain an understanding of various modeling platforms, outputs, and 3D printing technologies.
Students will obtain a perspective on service bureaus and when and how to use them.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the skills and subjects presented through finished models, prints, and renderings.
Students will be able to apply CAD/CAM tools to solve creative problems.
Students will be able to navigate a variety of software interfaces and basic digital tools leading to 2D and 3D projects including by not limited to objects, jewelry, sculpture, consumer products, fashion, mechanical components, and furniture.
Topical Outline
This course is designed to introduce students to digital design and how to create 2D and 3D projects.
Designed as a survey, students will utilize various 2D and 3D CAD/CAM software and acquire a broad understanding of various production sources and methods.
Software may include but is not limited to Adobe suite, Rhino3D, AutoDesk Fusion, and Solidworks, as well as free internet-based platforms. Methods include but are not limited to laser cutting, water jet cutting, 3-D printing, and rapid prototyping.
This course will address contemporary/historical material culture, emphasizing concepts and ideas within the arena of objects and their relationship to art/craft-based practices. Students will be introduced to CAD/CAM in relation to individual creative problems.
Lectures and discussions will engage critical discourse on topics such as material culture, the body, and objecthood. This course will introduce a wide range of practitioners and modes of visual dialogue spanning from the fine arts to crafts, design, and new media.
Class time will be divided between lectures, discussions, assignments, and tutorials centered around software offered and critiques of individual student projects.
