Course Objectives
Students will understand: 1. the interdisciplinary nature of environmental science, particularly with respect to life science, physical science, and earth science (which are areas of science that frame P-12 education) 2. the intersection between basic science research and engineering in an environmental science context 3. how to use environmental science to support science learning in the P-12 classroom 4. how to develop and adapt curriculum materials to teach environmental science in the P-12 classroom
Topical Outline
1. Examining science concepts related to environmental science issues (e.g., case study about particular environmental issue and identifying relevant life science, physical science, and earth science concepts related to the case) 2. Examining how science and engineering play a role in addressing environmental issues (e.g., alternative forms of energy) 3. Examining how science learning can be supported by using environmental issues to contextualize science concepts, thereby guiding P-12 students to understand connections between science concepts 4. Developing and/or adapting curriculum materials for teaching environmental science 5. Engaging P-12 students in environmental science research
