Course Objectives

To broaden understanding of gender and race relations by testing theories against very diverse real situations occurring across the globe. Social status outcomes world-wide reflect issues of national citizenship and civil rights, colonialism and coerced labor relations, and migration and labor market economic opportunities and constraints, each of which affects individuals differently depending on both race and gender. We will discuss this through an interdisciplinary approach. Readings reflect present-day situations in Western and Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and North America.
