Introduction to Black Psychology


Course Description

Deconstruction of traditional thought, behavior, and development as well as reconstruction of the same on contemporary terms; testing of nuances and varieties of multicultural and indigenous models. The designs and projected future of the Black Psychology Movement.

Please note the requirements for this course differ for undergraduate and graduate students. Graduate-level students will be required to complete an additional project and/or paper specific to their discipline that illustrates the utility of Black Psychology with the specific population(s) or stakeholders with whom they are being trained to engage professionally.

Course Objectives

Demonstrate knowledge of the historical roots of African/Black psychology; Understand the ways in which historical narratives (past and recent) have influenced psychological experiences of African-descent people; Develop a working understanding of theories, concepts, and scholarship associated with African/Black Psychology; Conceptualize and critically examine issues impacting people of African descent using an African/Black psychological perspective; Identify and explore strategies for using African/Black psychology perspectives as relevant to learner's training and professional pursuits

Foundations of African/Black Psychology; Historical Narratives and African/Black Psychology; Black/African American Identity and Identity Intersections; Relationships; Religion and Spirituality; Educational Issues; Hip Hop and the Media; Mental Health; Resilience, Resistance, and Liberation
