Course Description

A discussion-oriented, historical survey of recent Ukrainian and Russian cinema, with particular attention to current events, questions of cultural identity and the making of national traditions. Conducted in English with subtitled films.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Students will analyze an individual movie's contents, using the vocabulary of film studies.
  • Students will appraise a movie's successes and failures in the use of specific filmmaking techniques.
  • Students will recall significant developments in the history of Ukraine and Russia and explain their importance for contemporary Ukrainian and Russian movies.
  • Students will analyze in a formal essay a recent Ukrainian or Russian film's responses to current events.
