A discussion-oriented, historical survey of recent Ukrainian and Russian cinema, with particular attention to current events, questions of cultural identity and the making of national traditions. Conducted in English with subtitled films.

- Students will appraise a movie's successes and failures in the use of specific filmmaking techniques.
- Students will recall significant developments in the history of Ukraine and Russia and explain their importance for contemporary Ukrainian and Russian movies.
- Students will analyze in a formal essay a recent Ukrainian or Russian film's responses to current events.
