Politics, Society, and Culture of Scotland


Course Description

An examination of major changes in political and social structures affecting Scotland from the Scottish Reformation to the present. Topics include the Kirk (church), the monarchy, the Acts of Union, the Jacobite Rebellions, and the Scottish Enlightenment. Emphasis on Scottish nationalism and the identity of the Scottish people as well as the contributions Scots have made to the modern world.

Course Objectives

The course focuses on the experiential aspect of the study abroad trip. It will mainly consist of readings with reflections, field trips and field experiences, observation activities, periodic class discussion, final presentation. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate their understanding of and appreciation for the intellectual, philosophical, and religious traditions that have influenced Scotland and their cultural and political trajectory as a people. 2. Identify and evaluate the significant people and events that have shaped the Scottish identity, including their political and social structure. 3. Engage in meaningful collaboration, reflection, and inquiry about their experiences in a foreign country. 4. Identify and evaluate the historical and political background of the ebb and flow of Scottish nationalism. 5. Identify and evaluate the significant people and events that have shaped the modern world, with particular emphasis on the contributions Scottish people have made to the development of America and the forming of the U.S. government.

Scottish Enlightenment - the philosophical thought of this time and its impact on the nation, on education, and on society in general 3. The Jacobite movement 4. Adam Smith and David Hume 5. Impact of Scotland on the developing nation of America 6. The Scots who have contributed to Literature, Science, and Technology 7. Diaspora of Scottish people and their impact across the world 8. Current climate of nationalism, including a focus on BREXIT and the vote to devolve from the U.K.
