Social Entrepreneurship and Product Development in Ghana


Course Description

An introduction to entrepreneurship and product development through a retailing perspective of apparel and textile products made by entrepreneurs in Ghana, West Africa.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Additional objectives for graduate students are to identify opportunities for social entrepreneurship involvement with the Athens community and entrepreneur partners in Ghana and conduct a research study based on these topics.

Course Objectives

1. Understand the design and development process of textiles and apparel products made in Ghana. 2. Identify retail components important for the Athens retailer and the Ghanaian product that the retailer will sell. 3. Create a design to be produced in Ghana on behalf of the Athens retailer. 4. Make recommendations to the Athens retailer regarding promotion and sale of the Ghanaian product. 5. Compare the similarities and differences of entrepreneurship in the local Athens environment to that in Ghana. 6. Interact with Athens entrepreneurs, the Ghanaian people, and fellow colleagues with respect, vulnerability, and compassion. 7. Value the differences in culture, experience, and intersectionality of the Athens entrepreneurs, the Ghanaian people, and fellow colleagues. 8. Formulate useful and meaningful questions to guide group discussions and continue the dialogue about the experience in Ghana.


Topical Outline

1. Social entrepreneurship, textile, and apparel production in Ghana, women in Ghana 2. Design review discussing components of design (silhouette, style, details, texture, color) and the marketing mix (product, price, place, promotion, target customer) 3. Entrepreneur engagement and evaluation both from Athens and Ghana 4. Debrief with local entrepreneurs and product follow-up
