Understanding Anatomy: Sculpting and Drawing the Figure

Course Description

Elements of three-dimensional figure sculpture with two-dimensional figure drawing in the exploration of the architecture of human anatomy. The live model, skeleton, anatomy book, and écorché (flayed muscle sculpture) are all used to explore the form and space of the human figure. Perspective, cubic space, and topography are emphasized as the plastic means of expression.

Athena Title

Sculpt Draw Figure

Prerequisite

ARST 1050 or ARST 1050H

Semester Course Offered

Offered fall and spring

Grading System

A - F (Traditional)

Course Objectives

By the end of the semester, students will: 1. Gain proficiency in rendering the figure across multiple dimensions. 2. Develop a greater understanding of how to convey volume and form when rendering on a flat, two-dimensional substrate. 3. More clearly comprehend the anatomy, proportions, and movement of the human body. 4. Be able to generate more expressive drawings with confidence. 5. Learn to analyze complex forms and edit to essential information. 6. Integrate this approach to dimensional fluidity in their own work beyond figure drawing.

Topical Outline

1. Students will first learn to sculpt the figure in clay to clearly understand the anatomy, volume, and movement of the human body. 2. Students will draw from the live model while referencing their sculptures. This two-pronged level of study will facilitate the students' understanding and ability to render a three-dimensional form on a two-dimensional plane and vice versa. 3. Students will study anatomy, with emphasis placed on sighting, proportions and triangulation, gesture and mass, foreshortening, cross-contouring, and volume mapping.
