Develops written and oral communication skills applicable to professional settings. Fosters skills in leadership and collaboration, workplace-related social skills, time management, and strategic planning. Develops understanding of professionalism and ethical principles.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of this course, students will understand that professionalism is a constellation of behaviors exhibited throughout their professional lives. Students will be able to evaluate situations and respond in a manner that upholds the standards of professionalism.
  • By the end of this course, students will be able to communicate scientific information in a clear, professional manner to a variety of audiences, including other professionals as well as members of the public without a scientific background. This will be practiced through written and video presentations for which peer and instructor feedback are provided, allowing for revisions that incorporate feedback.
  • By the end of this course, students will be able to lead and collaborate according to situational needs in professional settings. This will be accomplished through discussions of qualities exhibited by effective leaders and collaborators and through a semester-long group project and a series of group exercises in which students alternate roles in the group, reflect on each other’s performance, and receive peer and instructor feedback throughout the semester.
  • By the end of this course, students will be able to develop supportive working relationships through collaboration, prosocial behaviors, and considering alternative perspectives.
  • By the end of this course, students will be able to employ time management and strategic planning techniques to balance their personal and professional needs while they progress in their careers.
  • By the end of this course, students will be able to navigate challenges in the work environment, focusing on attention to inclusion, self-awareness, mutual respect, and contributing to a workplace culture of accountability, dignity, and safety.

  • Oral communication, including verbal communication of scientific topics to peers and to the public and professional presentations.

  • Career management, including resumes/curriculum vitae and cover letters/personal statements, electronic presence, networking, and interviewing.
  • Leadership principles and skills.
  • Teamwork/collaboration principles and skills.
  • Workplace skills including emotional intelligence, constructive criticism, active listening, mentor mapping, conflict resolution, and time management.
