Russian-Speaking World: Kazakh Culture and Language for Learners of Russian


Course Description

An introduction to Kazakh language and culture, emphasizing oral and cultural proficiency and reading comprehension. Taught through the use of vocabulary in simulated settings, repetition drills, and frequent use of vocabulary, acting, and reading aloud. Augmented by reading and grammatical analysis of texts.

Course Objectives

This is a tutorial course designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of Kazakh grammar and vocabulary and to develop speaking, listening, and reading skills. At the same time, this course will acquaint students with important aspects of Kazakh culture, including high culture, social customs, and aspects of everyday life. By the end of this course, students should be able to communicate on basic everyday topics and understand simple conversations and texts in Kazakh. Students will be evaluated on the basis of regular take-home assignments and in-class quizzes testing oral fluency and listening and reading comprehension.


Topical Outline

The following is a representative topical outline: I. Introduction to Kazakh language, including alphabet, reading, pronunciation, stress, vowel harmony, consonant assimilation, and Kazakh culture. II. Talking about the self and family, including nationality, profession, studies, university, majors, classes, and schedule. III. Where one lives, including the city and its landmarks, describing and renting an apartment, getting around and shopping in the city. IV. Eating at home and at restaurants; visiting and entertaining guests. V. Daily routine, holidays, free time, and hobbies. VI. Discussing weather, health, clothing, and how one is doing or feeling.
