Intermediate Latin I


Course Description

Translating continuous Latin passages through prose readings from the works of Julius Caesar and verse readings from the works of Catullus and/or Ovid. Course content will be balanced between prose and poetry. Systematic review of Latin grammar and syntax.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to recall and identify high frequency Latin vocabulary.
  • Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate their control of Latin grammar through identifying and labeling forms and by translating texts.
  • Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to translate and read passages from ancient texts in Latin, both prepared and at sight.
  • Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to describe and interpret elements of an individual author’s style as well as common ancient Latin literary techniques, including specific conventions for Latin poetry and prose.
  • Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to describe and interpret ancient Roman viewpoints (cultural, social, political, religious, etc.) present in ancient Latin texts.
