Language Teaching Practicum


Course Description

Guided practice in teaching Arabic or Hebrew, applying pedagogical knowledge and skills. This practicum cannot be used to fulfill other Religion requirements.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to demonstrate a greater growth in linguistic understanding, teaching skill, and professional responsibility over the course of their language practicum, for example by taking the lead on guiding students through a classroom activity, designing a pedagogical exercise to address a specific problem, or helping students effectively deal with the challenges of language learning.

Non-Traditional Format

Students meet with faculty members on a regular basis. Much of the credit-bearing time is spent in practicum or teaching assignments.

Student learning Outcomes

  • Students will develop their analytical thinking competency through the practice of organizing and synthesizing evidence of language learning to reveal patterns in the language itself as well as in students’ learning of the language.
  • Students will develop their oral communication competency, specifically the skill of tailoring communication strategy, style, and convention appropriately for the audience and context of teaching a language.
  • Students will develop their leadership and collaboration competency by engaging and motivating students toward language learning through building classroom relations of encouragement and trust.

Topical Outline

  • The student will assist in a language class taught in the Religion Department. Each language class will have its own topical outline and the practicum assignments will be set individually with the student.
