Initiating Motivation for Change in Health, Exercise, and Sport
Course Description
Provides students and future practitioners with strong preparation for their roles in physical/health education, coaching, and health counseling, including the areas of public health, health promotion, physical therapy, and nursing. This course focuses on increasing the understanding of motivational processes impacting adoption, engagement, and adherence of healthy behaviors.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students: Graduate students will be required to provide five Scientific Article Summaries in addition to the current requirements.

Student learning Outcomes
The student will describe and interpret scientific literature pertaining to motivation and health behaviors, exercise, and sport, and to use theoretical and/or empirical research to draw logical conclusions.
The student will demonstrate basic knowledge about key content areas of motivation, health behaviors, exercise, and sport and be able to apply this knowledge appropriately in real world settings.
The student will utilize motivational theories and models, including motivational interviewing, to make well-informed decisions to engage your patients, students, athletes, and clients in healthy behaviors.
The student will demonstrate strategies to initiate a sustainable behavior change in your group of interest.
The student will demonstrate an ability to think and communicate one’s thoughts effectively in oral and written formats.
The student will demonstrate and apply ethical principles in one’s everyday work (American Psychological Association).
