Supervision of the practice of systemic supervision for clinical doctoral students.

Non-Traditional Format

Students will provide supervision of Master's-level clinical practice for a minimum of 2 hours per week (1 live and 1 consult or video). May also be required to facilitate a 3 hour practicum for Master's-level clinicians, dependent upon the site. Students will be required to participate in group supervision in addition to live, observed supervision with an AAMFT approved supervisor.

Student learning Outcomes

  • Students will supervise doctoral student SIT's supervision of family therapists.
  • Students will apply critical systemic thinking to complex ethical dilemmas and legal responsibilities of the supervisors of direct clinical practice.
  • Students will demonstrate competencies in relational/systemic supervision of clinical practice.
  • Students will demonstrate knowledge of relevant research to clinical populations being served by Master's-level clinical trainees.
  • Students will demonstrate competency in navigating multicultural content in the practice of supervision and assist Master's-level clinical trainees in developing cultural humility when providing intervention with clients.
  • Students will demonstrate competency in evaluation and assessment of Master's-level clinical trainee’s ability to use a systemic framework in case conceptualization, intervention model selection, goal development, case presentation, assessment, and evaluation.

Topical Outline

  • This course is a practicum for couple and family therapy supervisors in training (SITs) supervising Master's-level clinicians and getting supervision of that supervision experience. Class sessions consist of case presentations, discussion of case material, and live observation of supervision of Master's-level clinical trainees.
