Course Description

Focuses on select monuments of world art and architecture. Considering content, style, and cultural context, the discussion will introduce students to the academic discipline of art history through historic trends, intellectual ideas, and contemporary methodologies.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Students will derive meaning from images, objects, and buildings. Historical works of art are interpreted with regard to the expectations operative during the period of their creation.
  • Students will define the academic discipline of art history, historical and evidentiary reasoning, and contemporary methodologies.
  • Students will develop an understanding of the arts as a shared human activity.
  • Students will develop vocabulary, visual acuity, descriptive and other writing skills, as well as on basic learning and study techniques in the field of art history.
