Course Objectives
To expose students and prospective Spanish teachers to the linguistic nature of complex Spanish structures and potential implications for teaching and learning. Students examine and evaluate the instrumental value of grammatical explanations. Also review the prescriptive and the descriptive nature of grammatical generalizations found in pedagogical grammars. Students analyze the relationship between grammar and language use from a variety of data sources, including oral and written language, formal and informal registers.

Week I-II: Introduction. Linguistic approaches to the study of Language. Week II-IV: Fundamental principles of second language acquisition and learning. Week V-VI: Oral and written systems of linguistic representation. The Spanish sound system. Week VII-VIII: Structure of Spanish syllables. Phonetic and phonological processes. Week IX-X: Spanish noun and verb morphology Week XI-XII: Syntax and semantics of Spanish pronouns. Dialectal variation. Week XIII-XIV: Spanish verbal aspect. Week XV: Mood distinctions. Conclusions.
