Social Innovation Community Leadership – Service Learning Projects


Course Description

How to scope and manage a meaningful, business-related service leadership project for a local nonprofit community organization using MBA skillsets. The projects are designed to impact areas critical to the greater Athens community, situated in any of the following areas: education, health and well-being, arts and culture, economic development, and policy.

Non-Traditional Format

Course includes a service-learning project during the semester that either employs skills or knowledge learned in the course or teaches new skills or knowledge related to course objectives. The course uses service-learning as the primary pedagogical tool for teaching course objectives. Students will work on a comprehensive project(s) and may be required to send considerable time outside the classroom. Students will be engaged in the service-learning component for approximately 75-100% of overall instructional time.

A/S (A-F or S/U)


Course Objectives

The objective of this course is to explore and apply broader applications of MBA skillsets to advance community-based projects to move the needle on an initiative critical to the partnering organization and the community at large.


Topical Outline

There will be opportunities to build your experience and skillset in the following areas: building community partner relationships; authentic, professional communications, timing, and content; applying an MBA skillset more broadly beyond a pure business context; building an engaged, empowered, and impactful project team; project management tools; building consensus with community partners whose expertise likely varies from your own; anticipating and managing change; and giving and receiving productive feedback (within teams and with community partners).
