An in-depth understanding of theoretical frameworks and practices of assessment in science education, including standardized tests and classroom-based assessments. Review and examination of recent research on developing assessments to meet the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) performance expectations.

Course Objectives
Students will be able to: • Demonstrate understanding of the theories and foundations of science assessments and the major progress of assessments (e.g., learning progression, innovative assessments) in the field recently. • Demonstrate understanding of the major work in the field devoted to meet the assessment requirements of NGSS. • Demonstrate understanding of both formative assessment and summative assessment practices in science education and the challenges and opportunities of these assessments. • Demonstrate understanding of innovative and emergent assessments in science education. • Demonstrate understanding of evidence-based design and principles for science assessments. • Evaluate and critique the design, use, and validity of science assessments.
