Practicum in Intensive Reading Intervention

Analytical Thinking

Course Description

Students will apply structured literacy techniques to address the needs of struggling readers. Students will develop and deliver a one-on-one, structured-literacy reading intervention program. Emphasis will be on the implementation of evidence-based reading techniques, ongoing progress monitoring of student performance, and reflective instructional decision making.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will complete a final parent report that reflects progress monitoring data and a plan for future remediation.

  • Students will apply specific, evidence-based instructional strategies based upon a structured literacy approach for the teaching of reading.
  • Students will master strategies associated with increasing opportunities to respond (OTR) in order to provide intensive intervention.
  • Students will administer reading diagnostic assessments for the purpose of instructional planning.
  • Students will develop an intervention plan that includes evidence-based components.
  • Students will implement key aspects of reading intervention that address decoding, written expression, and comprehension.
  • Students will teach strategies to struggling readers for the purpose of improving reading, writing, spelling, and handwriting performance.
