Exploration of the field of fundraising and development to obtain financial resources, including gift planning, annual campaigns, capital and endowment campaigns, direct solicitation, and others. Management of volunteers, and preparing and analyzing cash flow statements and financial statements for nonprofit organizations.

Course Objectives
Students will be able to: 1. Understand the philosophy and processes of supporting nonprofit organizations through financial and other contributions 2. Examine the field of fundraising and development, including how to obtain financial resources through: - annual fund programs - gift planning program - capital and endowment campaigns - direct and indirect forms of solicitation 3. Understand how to manage volunteers effectively in fundraising 4. Be able to prepare and analyze cash flow statements and financial statements for nonprofit organizations

1. Motivations for working and giving in the nonprofit field 2. Brief history of philanthropy 3. The organizational and tax aspects of nonprofits 4. The sectors of the nonprofit field (arts and culture, social and human services, health care, education, religion, environmental, others) 5. Skills needed to function in each of these sectors (public relations, grant writing, prospect research, special events, communications) 6. Types of fundraising (annual funds, volunteer projects, gift planning, capital and endowment campaigns, others) 7. Use of databases for research and planning 8. Budgeting 9. Building understanding and passion for an organizational mission 10. Recruiting, motivating, and retaining members and volunteers 11. Obtaining resources to implement organizational goals 12.
