Innovation Management in Nonprofit and Government Organizations: From Creativity to Implementation


Course Description

How organizations go about the process of creating, managing, and implementing innovations. Areas of emphasis are on individual and group creativity, the innovation process, innovation typologies, drivers for innovation, models of creativity and innovation, and factors influencing innovation (organizational culture, transformational leadership, board governance, foundations, and partnerships).

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students should: • Develop a level of understanding about creativity and innovation and their connection/centrality to coming up with solutions to addressing social problems. • Develop a level of understanding of their personal creativity and its potential to affect their work as they come up with and implement solutions to address social issues. • Gain an appreciation for diversity and its centrality to the innovation process. • Understand the ways in which innovation can be encouraged in the organization and know the tools and techniques used to create and foster innovation. • Understand and be able to analyze the creativity and innovation processes, identifying the key players and the sources of creativity and innovation. • Recognize the factors inhibiting innovation and discuss how they can be overcome; know the organizational characteristics necessary to assist the innovation process. • Understand the management of the human side of innovation, the importance of organizational culture, and the use of power and politics as aids to or barriers to innovation implementation. • Be able to critically evaluate the role of a leader on her/his ability to lead the innovation process.
