Course Description
Examination of evidence-based strategies, curricula, and assessment techniques for planning and implementing comprehensive literacy instruction for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Techniques for promoting literacy development with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems will be addressed.

Student learning Outcomes
Students will identify domains in comprehensive literacy instruction and the role of each in literacy development for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).
Students will identify evidence-based strategies and curricula for supporting literacy development for students with I/DD.
Students will identify and adapt assessments to inform literacy programming and instruction for students with I/DD.
Students will implement literacy assessments and interpret assessment data to inform instructional planning in literacy for students with I/DD.
Students will design literacy instruction that addresses concepts of print, sight word reading, vocabulary, oral and receptive language, listening comprehension, and/or reading comprehension.
Students will implement literacy instruction utilizing evidence-based practices, including explicit and systematic instruction, for students with I/DD.
Students will adapt literacy instruction to promote literacy and language development for students with I/DD who utilize AAC.
