Course Description

Telescopes and astronomical observations, including photometry and spectroscopy. Laboratory exercises include visual, photographic, and photoelectric observations and data analysis with standard astronomical software.

Course Objectives

To provide Physics and Astronomy majors and other interested students with practical experience in observational astronomy.


Topical Outline

Sidereal Astronomy. Telescopes. Photometry, including photography, photoelectric photometry, color systems and CCDs. Astronomical data reduction. Spectroscopy and spectral classification. Basic texts will include "Observational Astronomy" by S. Birney and "Stars and Their Spectra" by J.B. Kaler.
