Course Objectives
RUSS 1002 is the second part of a two-course sequence designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of Russian grammar and to develop all four language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. At the same time, this course will acquaint students with important aspects of Russian culture, including high culture, social customs and aspects of everyday life. By the end of this sequence, students should be able to communicate on a variety of everyday topics and understand simple conversations and texts in Russian. Students will be evaluated on the basis of regular written assignments, tests (4-5 per semester), and a final exam. Additional short quizzes may be given at the discretion of the instructor.
Topical Outline
The following is a representative topical outline for RUSS 1002. Note: Grammar and vocabulary are introduced progressively in connection with specific communicative goals. The same topics may occur more than once within the two-course sequence for Elementary Russian: this allows students to master structures and vocabulary in manageable segments. Each reoccurrence of a topic introduces new details, while also reinforcing material previously covered. 1.
