Course Description
Drawing on critical, sociocultural, and anthropological theories in education, this initial course will ground new EDEL Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) teacher candidates’ explorations of equity, access, and inclusion in diverse elementary classrooms, pre-K-5. Students will engage in community-based research and learn about their professional roles as citizens, advocates, and classroom activists.

Course Objectives
Students will: • Recognize the role of equity, access, and inclusion in elementary education • Theorize the relevance of the prison industrial complex and school-to-prison pipeline in the lives of children of color • Articulate how privilege and bias negatively impact teaching and learning in elementary education • Synthesize and practice culturally responsive and sustaining teaching
