English Education Practicum Seminar I


Course Description

The first in a three-course sequence, this course examines the intersections between coursework and practice as students work across scaffolded professional experiences in both middle and high school English classrooms in a variety of contexts.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will conduct an audit/analysis of texts available in classroom teacher libraries and the school media center.

Student learning Outcomes

  • Students will be able to observe and reflect on classroom learning and teaching.
  • Students will be able to identify, recognize, and reflect on the characteristics of effective teaching (of English/Language Arts).
  • Students will be able to compare and contrast pedagogical, structural, and contextual differences across multiple school contexts.
  • Students will be able to co-plan activities and learning experiences with a mentor teacher, and evaluate the impact of subsequent instruction on pupil learning.
  • Students will be able to analyze and discuss classroom/school experience in dialogue with theoretical and research-based texts from the field.
