Course Objectives
This course is an in-depth study of Pushkin's works in all genres, his place in the Russian literary tradition, and his influence on the development of the modern Russian literary language. Close readings of selected texts, and memorization of some shorter poems. At the same time, this course is designed to further develop students' language skills. All readings, class discussion, and written assignments are in Russian. Students will be evaluated on the basis of participation in class discussions, oral presentations, and regular written essays.
Topical Outline
Introduction: The unique role of Pushkin in Russian culture. The 'Lyceum' years: early poetry. Pushkin's exile in the south. Romantic poems. Pushkin's exile at Mikhailovskoe. Love poetry and nature poetry of this period. Pushkin's novel in verse "Eugene Onegin." The history of its creation, the content and form of the novel, reading of selected chapters. The poetry of Pushkin's last decade. Pushkin's prose: "The Tales of Belkin"; reading of "The Stationmaster" and "Noble Girl - Peasant Girl"; film adaptations of these stories; the novel "The Captain's Daughter."
