Introduces basic concepts for the analysis of non-tonal music from the twentieth- and twenty-first centuries, focusing on theories and analysis of pitch, rhythm, form, and other elements in works from this time period. Content for the course will vary depending on the instructor, and aural skills and listening strategies are part of the course’s evaluation.

However, upon completion of any version of this course, the successful student will be able to: • Construct larger analytical arguments (both in writing and orally) that demonstrate higher-level critical thinking skills with regard to the analysis of non-tonal repertoire. • Demonstrate analytical fluency using appropriate analytical tools for the non-tonal repertoire studied. • Demonstrate the ability to write and speak intelligently about the non-tonal repertoire studied using appropriate theoretical terminology. • Demonstrate proficiency in aural skills as related to the non-tonal repertoire studied.
