Course Description
A basic introduction to the fundamentals of jazz piano with an emphasis on techniques such as scales, arpeggios, chord voicings, reading, transposition, "comping", and score analysis. Includes assigned written or improvised playing assignments and performance exams in a solo or group context.

Course Objectives
• To help students perform basic jazz piano techniques and to broaden their understanding of the jazz idiom • To give students a better understanding of the function of harmony for composing, for writing arrangements, and for performance on their primary instrument

• Practicing/memorizing chord progressions and voicings • Playing written examples of jazz piano styles • Writing harmonizations of tunes and playing them at the keyboard
