Course Description
Designed primarily to prepare you to teach topics that are typically described as “music theory” to pre-college students. Such topics include several different areas of musicianship including fundamentals, harmony and voice leading, sight-singing, contextual listening, transcription/dictation, and analysis. Designed to be a practical course that places an emphasis on how to teach pre-college music theory topics through effective lesson planning and model teaching.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will have an additional course design project, which will involve designing a detailed course syllabus and final exam.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the successful student will be able to: • Discuss the merits of different pedagogical approaches as they apply to music theory. • Create effective lesson plans for a variety of pre-college music theory topics. • Demonstrate practical and effective teaching strategies and techniques in the classroom through model teaching. • Evaluate the features of a variety of commonly used music theory and aural skills textbooks. • Complete and grade analysis and voice-leading exercises quickly and accurately.
