Course Description

Review of grammar, idioms, and vocabulary; practice in translating moderately difficult technical and non-technical German texts into correct English. Does not apply to the major or minor in German or language certificates. Satisfies language requirement for graduate students.

Course Objectives

To enable a student to read in German, with the aid of a dictionary, articles relevant to whatever their field of interest or specialization is.


Topical Outline

German nouns, gender, case, number. Present tense of sein, haben, and regular verbs. Introductory words for the nouns phrase. Strong and irregular weak verbs. Weak and strong adjective endings. Adverbs and separable and inseparable prefixes. Perfect tenses, participles, comparison of adjectives and adverbs. Future tense. Passive voice. Reflexive pronouns. Modal auxiliaries. Coordinating and subordinating conjunctions. Relative and demonstrative pronouns. Extended adjectival constructions. Da- and wo- compounds. Forms and uses of the subjunctive.
