Course Objectives CHEM 1110 A. Understand that the natural world has an atomic and molecular basis which successfully explains its physical phenomena B. Understand the importance of chemistry in our everyday lives and the financial realities of a global economy C. Understand the impact of humans and natural phenomena on the Earth’s environment D. Understand the impact of chemical phenomena on the fields of nursing, dietetics, marketing, and fashion E. Understand the limitations of science in understanding and remediating natural phenomena F. Understand chemical language and symbolism G. Understand how experimental data influence the development of scientific theories
Topical Outline
Topics covered include I. Chemical Measurement Units and Calculations II. States of matter III. Chemical Structures and Reactivity of elements IV. Compounds and Mixtures V. Acid-Base Chemistry. Environmental subjects covered are topical, with an emphasis on the influence of chemical species and processes. Example topics will include: 1. The greenhouse effect 2. Ozone depletion 3. Acid rain 4. Chemical and nuclear waste disposal 5. Water and air pollution.
