HVAC Systems for Buildings and Industry

Course Description

A study of the system concepts, sizing, design, and equipment used for the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in buildings (commercial and residential), as well as industrial applications.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to include a separate additional study package. This is to be in the form of a separate research study paper, with the topic being mutually agreed upon between the student and the instructor. This topic could include, for example, areas such as new energy-efficient system technologies or technologies for improving outdoor ventilation and indoor air quality in buildings.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: • Develop a better understanding of the refrigeration cycle as applied to buildings and cooling systems. • Compute the energy and humidity aspects of building environmental control using psychrometric chart data. • Understand all the factors involved with a building’s thermal control and ventilation requirements with respect to the environment and with the human occupants. • Understand the basic equipment and techniques used to control the environment of buildings. • Design systems to handle the distribution of air within the built environment, as well as chilled and hot water. • Gain insight into the differences between an industrial HVAC system compared to general buildings and methods employed in industrial applications.
