Professional Seminar for Public Health Practitioners I


Course Description

Focuses on advancing professional and academic writing skills for public health practitioners. Students will enhance their written and oral communication skills. Topics will include basic scientific writing concepts, research procedures, written and verbal communication, systems thinking, and collaborative learning.

Course Objectives

1. Demonstrate clear and concise written and oral communication. 2. Synthesize and articulate the use of descriptive statistics in public health research to diverse audiences. 3. Apply each step of the scientific method of research to a public health problem: problem definition, hypothesis testing, explanation, prediction, and theory construction. 4. Articulate principles for effective team-based learning and problem solving. 5. Describe the basic tenets of the public health leadership decision-making dilemma.


Topical Outline

Each semester will include several of the following intensive research and writing topics: • Understanding academic and professional writing • Understanding scientific communication • Using library and citation management tools • Exploring complex public health issues through case study analysis and presentations • Composing literature review, management presentation, and policy brief • Presenting complex public health issues to lay audiences
