Vineyard Production and Management


Course Description

Focuses on the basic concepts of viticulture, concerning the productive commercial management practices required across a variety of grape production systems (juice, raisin, table, wine). Students will learn the basics of vine physiology, soil and water quality, plant health management, vineyard establishment practices, such as site selection and design, labor, and production economics, and be introduced to the methods used to assess fruit quality.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will have additional assignment requirements for their portfolio projects and will be evaluated to a higher standard. Additional assignments will include extra components in each portfolio section requiring an evaluation of peer-reviewed literature as well as writing a new portfolio section concerning a vineyard production research topic of their choice and presenting it to the class. Graduate students will also provide constructive feedback to classmates.

The course will involve lectures, in-depth discussions, and hands-on activities concerning the concepts outlined in the course description.

Course Objectives

After completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Develop an understanding of viticulture practices and how they relate back to the phenology and physiology of the grapevine 2. Identify the benefits and disadvantages of cultivar choices, trellis systems, and vineyard management regimes 3. Describe and identify symptoms of biotic and abiotic damage to grapevines 4. Exhibit proficiency in vineyard management calculations: balanced pruning, crop load, crop estimation, sprayer calibration, and ET determination for irrigation scheduling 5. Apply knowledge learned in class to create a vineyard management portfolio
