Applied Practice Experience in Public Health


Course Description

Students will gain an opportunity to apply competencies obtained in the MPH curriculum in public health leadership, theory, technical training, writing, and communication through a practicum in a community, clinical, or research-based agency.

Student learning Outcomes

  • Apply principles of leadership, governance, and management, which include creating a vision, empowering others, fostering collaboration, and guiding decision-making by applying competencies attained to the agency setting.
  • Communicate audience-appropriate public health content, both in writing and through oral presentation, by producing and presenting a Comprehensive Site Profile, ePortfolio, and ePoster, based on the student's APE experience.
  • Describe the importance of cultural competence in communicating public health content by identifying and presenting it to external stakeholders and/or non-public health professionals.

Topical Outline

  • Examine the placement site, including an org. chart, mission, vision, and current FY budget and strategic goals. Use this information to develop the APE proposed products and presentations.
  • Detail the demographic and economic profile of the audience(s) that the agency serves and define ways in which they will work with the agency to ensure appropriate communication strategies for APE Products.
  • Create a Comprehensive Site Profile and ePoster using the combined research and the 300-hour semester-long field experience.
  • Finalize ILE e-Portfolio, resume, and cover letter for final assessment.
  • Exhibit acquisition of MPH and Concentration competencies via a presentation of APE products in ePoster format.
