Dance in New York City Field Study


Course Description

First-hand dance experience in New York City, exploring the historic dance scene. Visit/work in theatres, professional schools, and Dance Collection at the New York Public Library for Performing Arts; participate in dance classes, network with professionals, learn professional practices in preparing for job auditions, and attend performances. Readings, discussions, and reflective practice activities.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of the course, students should be able to: 1) identify appropriate venues for professional dance training in New York City that connect to professional job auditions 2) conduct investigative dance research at a world-class library archives 3) discuss the legacy/history of dance in New York City 4) demonstrate networking skills in dance and dance-related fields 5) present/perform a professional-level dance audition 6) physically navigate the city


Topical Outline

This is an intensive three-week immersion in professional dance practices in New York City, one of the world’s leading dance centers. Through dance classes, visits, performances, discussions, and readings, this class explores the dance scene in New York City and prepares students for the process of pursuing a career in dance. • Introduction to the history and legacy of dance in New York City including key figures and companies • Visit and attend professional dance classes in at least two major dance training venues • Meet and talk with practitioners and professionals to foster relationships for future careers and professional activities • Learn to evaluate and connect to resources and opportunities • Introduction to using the Archives of the Dance Collection at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center • Participate in a mock or actual professional dance job audition • Attend, review, and discuss performances – at least 2-3 dance performances and one Broadway show, as available • Learn various areas of the city and how to use public transportation • Daily class meetings and discussions prior to, and after, the activities of the day • Written assignments will include journals, reflective response papers, and a final paper summarizing the experience
