Intermediate/Advanced Hip-Hop Dance and Culture


Course Description

An in-depth research exploration of the evolution and development of Hip-Hop dance. Focusing on the origins of Hip-Hop movement performance and rhythm coordination in the context of contemporary culture. This course will strongly explore how Hip-Hop culture embraces the youth through oppression, violence, identity, personal expression, culture, and power.

Course Objectives

· An in-depth understanding of movement in relation to Hip Hop music . Explore Hip-Hop inspired art and activist projects in the community · An in-depth understanding of polyrhythm in Hip-Hop aesthetics and culture · Be able to create a choreography using Hip-Hop elements, concepts, and beats · Be able to demonstrate/teach Hip-Hop movement using classroom materials · An in-depth understanding of the elements of Hip-Hop · Develop a deep appreciation of the Hip Hop cultural, political, and artistic value · Be knowledgeable in the nuances of mainstream Hip-Hop, conscious rap, and underground Hip-Hop . Consider ways in which Hip-Hop speaks to youth through oppression, violence, identity, personal expression, culture, and power


Topical Outline

a) An intense warm-up with Hip-Hop beats and an introduction to movement vocabulary b) Complex center movement exercises and combinations c) Locomotive exercises and combinations d) Featured combination synthesizing fundamental concepts e) Compose the final project through group work and community outreach performance GROUP PROJECT – Students will create their own art, choreography, and beats using class material and research a 5-minute Hip-Hop dance style with the Hip-Hop cultural experience. The elements of each dance form or style that was covered in class must be clearly articulated.
