Herd Health Study Away


Course Description

This Maymester course, in partnership with The University of Warmia and Mazury in Poland, uses a hands-on experience and team-based work to provide training in concepts of animal health. The course uses a problem-based inquiry approach that combines educational travel, seminar, lectures, teamwork, and applied lab and field activities.

Non-Traditional Format

This study away course will consist of lecture, lab, excursions, and cultural activities. The total hours of lecture per week is 10 (30 total for the course) and lab/field/excursion is 13.3 (40 total for the course).

Course Objectives

The course is designed for students to be able to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge and practical skills in health management of herds 2. Explain the impact of quality of biosecurity, nutrition, and veterinary care on animal welfare and health as well as public health 3. Critically evaluate a herd health issue, propose and evaluate a solution 4. Work collaboratively with students from host institution and develop teamwork skills 5. Communicate appropriately and effectively across audiences
