Faculty-led excursions to sites of cultural, historical, and/or scientific interest in areas of coastal Georgia. This course is designed to enhance the experiential nature of the Semester@Skidaway domestic field study program.

Course Objectives
The goal of this course is to provide students with enriching experiences which leverage the unique history, culture, and environment of coastal Georgia. Tours of regional points of interest and the natural environments of the salt marsh ecosystems, barrier islands, and beaches will contextualize materials covered in other Semester@Skidaway courses. Faculty-led sampling aboard Skidaway’s fleet of small water craft will provide opportunities to collect environmental samples and employ field techniques. Learning Outcomes: • Describe the geological processes that shape the Georgia coastline • Appreciate the ocean’s importance as a natural resource for the state of Georgia • Connect the ocean with the history and culture of the region • Evaluate how human activities are changing the ocean
Topical Outline
Students will have field trips to the following coastal sites: UGA Marine Education Center and Aquarium Skidaway River Sampling Wormsloe Cultural Site Tybee Island Marine Science Center Wassaw Island and Sound Georgia Ports Authority UGA Marine Institute and Sapelo Island
