Scientific Principles of Conditioning and Fitness


Course Description

Designing and implementing individualized exercise prescriptions for athletic conditioning or physical fitness development. Development of skills required in conducting physical fitness tests for aerobic power, body composition, flexibility, and muscular strength and endurance.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to do additional reading of original research related to topics covered in the course each week and write a summary and analysis of the implications for practice that will determine a portion of their grade. In addition, they will be given more rigorous examinations including essay questions.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to: 1. Discuss the safety factors as they apply to pre- participation screening. 2. Identify potential risk factors prior to participation in an exercise program. 3. Describe the techniques employed to develop aerobic fitness, muscular strength, flexibility and anaerobic power. 4. Describe the exercise techniques used for proper weight loss. 5. Demonstrate the proper techniques and procedures for measuring aerobic endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, and body composition. 6. Read original research related to assessment and development of fitness and summarize the implications for practice (graduate students).
