Empirical Model-Building in Social Research

Course Description

Simultaneous equations and confirmatory factor methods to evaluate structural and measurement models. Emphasis on the interplay between theory and the construction and evaluation of empirical models.

Athena Title

SOC MODEL BUILDING

Prerequisite

SOCI 6630 or STAT 6220 or permission of department

Semester Course Offered

Offered every even-numbered year.

Grading System

A - F (Traditional)

Course Objectives

The primary objective of this course is to teach students how to use the LISREL and HLM statistical software packages. Students also learn how to work with different data structures and how to manipulate data sets, including aggregating, adding, and matching data from different sources. Proficiency will be demonstrated through a series of computer assignments and the development of an original research paper using the methods discussed.

Topical Outline

Data Structures and Manipulating Data Sets Review of Basic Regression Structural Equation Modeling with LISREL Hierarchical Linear Modeling with HLM
