Healthcare Finance for Public Health Practitioners


Course Description

Course provides a working knowledge of financial management for managers and administrators who work or plan to work in public health and not-for-profit organizations. Course includes discussions on basics of financial accounting, costs and controls, budgeting, financial analysis, revenue, and revenue sources for governmental and not-for-profit organizations.

Student learning Outcomes

  • Students will be able to explain generally accepted accounting principles and other appropriate standards.
  • Students will be able to gather, interpret, and report financial data and communicate data and information according to standards.
  • Students will be able to develop budgets and financial data according to prescribed submission formats and specifications.
  • Students will be able to use cost, managerial accounting, and economic evaluation approaches and apply these skills to the practice of public health.
  • Students will be able to assess budget activities and their relationship to the operational and program goals of the organization.
  • Students will be able to explain basic financial and business processes including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and time accounting.
  • Students will be able to apply principles of financial management to promote financial accountability and transparency.
  • Students will be able to explain the role of audits for program improvement.
  • Students will be able to analyze process of identifying new funding sources, revenue streams, and product lines, as well as strengthening and maintaining existing ones.
  • Students will be able to examine the relationship between strategic planning, budgeting, and financial management.
