Course Description
Theoretical and applied German phonology and word structure. Taught in English.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be responsible for a formal oral
presentation. They will also read more primary and secondary
materials, which will be incorporated into the final examination
and the final paper. Requirements for the final research paper
will be different for undergraduate and graduate students.
Undergraduates will be expected to write an 8-10 page paper,
while graduate students will be required to complete a 12-17
page
research project.

Course Objectives
1. To introduce general principles of German phonology and morphology. 2. To become familiar with current issues in phonological and morphological theory relevant to the German language. 3. To enhance understanding of the linguistic principles underlying Standard German pronunciation and word formation. 4. To apply linguistic theory to problems in German phonetics, phonemics, and word structure.
