Course Description
Provides training in high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills and other medical emergencies and offers the opportunity for American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. The course uses a combination of online and in-person, interactive activities.

Non-Traditional Format
This course will be taught 95% or more online. Students are expected to complete online activities independently, as assigned each week. Each activity will consist of reading, training videos, or both, and will be accompanied by a written reflection and/or quiz that must be submitted by the end of the week.

Student Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to describe the importance of high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and its impact on survival.
Students will be able to describe all steps in the Chains of Survival.
Students will be able to apply the BLS concepts of the Chains of Survival.
Students will be able to recognize the signs of someone needing CPR.
Students will be able to perform high-quality CPR for an adult, a child, and an infant.
Students will be able to describe the importance of early use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).
Students will be able to demonstrate the appropriate use of an AED.
Students will be able to provide effective ventilation by using a barrier device.
Students will be able to describe the importance of teams in multirescuer resuscitation.
Students will be able to perform as an effective team member during multirescuer CPR.
Students will be able to describe the technique for relief of foreign-body airway obstruction for an adult, a child, and an infant.
