Jazz Theory


Course Description

A study of jazz music theory including chord and scale construction, jazz nomenclature, chord/scale relationships, jazz song forms (AABA, blues), harmonic progressions and chord voicing principles. Students will engage in analyses of selected transcriptions, musical excerpts, and recordings. Students will demonstrate mastery of the topics covered through written, playing, and oral assignments.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to write more in-depth written responses about the topics that are covered. In addition, they will be required to write an essay that is a theoretical analysis of a jazz recording of their choice.

  • Students will be able to define and aurally identify melodic approaches, harmonic progressions, and techniques used in various improvisational musical styles.

  • Students will understand advanced harmonic relationships and various jazz song forms.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of basic chord voicing principles.
