Adv. Plant Breeding Proficiency


Course Description

Practical application of advanced plant breeding concepts. Students will prepare an in-depth proposal to develop a new hybrid breeding program for an assigned crop.

Students will design a hybrid crop breeding program with the same schedule and due date as Advanced Plant Breeding Practicum.

Student learning Outcomes

  • Students will develop an in-depth understanding of the scope of research methods, techniques, breeding strategies, and resources used in plant breeding programs.

Topical Outline

  • Design a comprehensive, modern plant breeding program for a hybrid crop to demonstrate understanding of germplasm resources, breeding strategies, field design, use of modern technologies (e.g. marker-assisted selection, genomic selection, gene editing, & transgenes), budgetary and personnel needs, intellectual property, and licensing.
