Guitar Techniques


Course Description

Basic principles and methods of guitar performance and pedagogy.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will have heightened requirements for class leadership and song demonstrations. The final project for graduate students will include a more robust song demonstration in complexity and number.

Student learning Outcomes

  • Students will perform in individual and group guitar experiences, including leading and teaching monophonic melodies, chords, scales, and improvisation.
  • Students will apply theory and aural skill concepts to guitar performance and pedagogy.
  • Students will create and arrange simple melodies in assigned keys.
  • Students will prepare chord sheets in proper rhythmic alignment and chordal structures.
  • Students will perform a 3-chord folk song to lead in class.
  • Students will participate in class discussion pertaining to common problems and misconceptions related to folk guitar performance and pedagogy.
