Movement and Community in Ghana


Course Description

Course explores traditional/cultural, pedagogical/theoretical, well-being, and performance experiences in Ghana. Work with influential artists and learn techniques of community engagement through dance movement leading to collaborative, community-based performances in various cities in Ghana. Course also embraces a study of the history and culture of Ghana.

Student learning Outcomes

  • At the conclusion of the course, students should be able to discuss community-based movement/dance in Ghana.
  • At the conclusion of the course, students should be able to explain how movement and community work together and are intertwined in Ghana’s culture and history.
  • At the conclusion of the course, students should be able to explore therapeutic topics through movement exploration.
  • At the conclusion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate a West African movement vocabulary.
  • At the conclusion of the course, students should be able to organize and/or participate in events and performances that bring people together as a community.
  • At the conclusion of the course, students should be able to work with a community partner to collaboratively create a community-based performance/experience.
  • At the conclusion of the course, students should be knowledgeable about the history and culture of Ghana.

Topical Outline

  • This is an intensive three-week immersion in movement and community in Ghana. Through dance/movement classes with influential local artists, visits to various sites and local communities, performances, discussions, and readings, this class explores the culture and community of the people of Ghana and prepares students for building community engagement through movement/dance.
